OVES 4th Graders Donate $400.23 to No Kill Facility

When given the option of participating in the Gift Exchange or donating to a charity, the 4th grade classes at Okaw Valley Elementary voted to make a donation to the Macon County Animal Shelter.  Why Macon County?  They wanted to donate to a no kill facility and part of our school district is in Macon County.  Chief Warden Roy Austin and his assistant Amber came to their classroom on December 16th to accept the check.  They also brought a friend, Trooper.  Mr. Austin talked with the students about the importance of adopting animals and also let them know how their donation will be spent.

I am very proud of our students for this responsible and caring act during this Holiday Season.

Stranger Danger!

Students attended an assembly on November 1st named STRANGER DANGER.  The focus was to how to recognize a potential abductor and what to do if someone were to grab you.  Jeff DeVore from DeVore's Academy demonstrated to the school the different types of abductors they need to recognize such as the Gift Giver.  He/She will lure kids to their car with promises of cd's, video games or whatever they discover the child would want.  He provided a handout to students to take home and I have hightlighted a few of the items on the handout below:

How Parents Can Protect Children from Abduction

  • Have a plan in case your child gets separated from you in public.
  • Make sure your child knows their full name, address and phone number.
  • Teach your child how to reach you (home, office, mobile)
  • Teach your child how to call the police.
  • Know where your children are at all times and who they are with.
  • Never leave your child alone in a public place, stroller or car.
  • Always accompany younger children to a public restroom.
  • Teach your children not to accept rides and gifts from strangers.
  • Always accompany your child on door-to-door activities, i.e. Halloween, school fundraising campaigns, etc.

How Children Can Protect Themselves

  • Always tell your parents where you are going and who you are with.
  • Never answer the door if alone.
  • Do not invite anyone in the house without the permission of a parent or babysitter.
  • NEVER get into anyone's car without permission.
  • Don't tell anyone on the phone that your parents are not home. Instead tell them that your parents can't come to the phone and take a message.
  • Don't go to restrooms in out-of-the-way places without a trusted adult.

Stranger Danger, Tricks Strangers Use to Lure Children

  • A stranger may quickly approach the victim. This element of surprise does not allow the child to think about what is happening and get away.
  • A stranger may ask for help, such as directions or to help find a lost pet.
  • A stranger may approach with false caring, promise or knowing child's name if noted on child's possessions (shirt, lunchbox, and toy).
  • A stranger may pose as an authority figure (police, firemen, security) and ask the child to leave with them.

I urge you to go over the handout with your child and make sure they understand the material and they also understand that no age is safe.
OVES is looking into other possible assemblies and training for students concerning this issue.

Visitors from Sullivan teaches about Bullying

On October 20th the 6th Grade Choir from Sullivan Middle School visited our students today with a message on Bullying.  Using narrative segments, role playing, singing and dancing the K - 4 students learned how it feels to be bullied, showed how bullying looks and sounds and then how to stop bullying.  Their program lasted about 15 min. and was received well by students and staff.  Following the program Mr. McCausland briefly reviewed the program to make sure they remember what the saw and heard.  Thank you SMS 6th Grade Choir!
