Family Math Night

April 11th OVES held a Family Math Night.  Students were given "Passports" as they entered the building and their goal was to visit 6 of 10 activity centers.  As they participated in the activity their Passport was hole punched and once they received 6 hole punches they deposited their Passport in a tub for a chance at winning a Kindle Fire HD.  The Kindle Fire HD and a drink was provided by the OVES PTO.  Below are pictures of students enjoying the evening.  Thank to all who attended and those responsible for making Math Night successful.

5 Essential Skills Survey

Gov. Quinn has proclaimed February 15 "Illinois 5Essentials Day" and encourages schools to take 15 minutes on the 15th to participate in the survey. Note that at least 30 percent of parents and  50 percent of teachers at each school must fill out this survey in order for ISBE to have enough data to generate a school-level report. Data will also be shared on the new school report cards in 2013.

Parents may take the survey anytime before February 28th by following this link: https://illinois.5-essentials.org/2012/

Parents can also take advantage of our computer during Parent/Teacher Conferences to take the survey.

Sharon Wicker Memorial Fund Donation

Mrs. Wicker loved her IPad.  She saw how it could be used in the classroom and she wanted students of OVES to have the opportunity to use them in class.  Prior to her passing she asked that a fund be created to purchase pads' with donated memorial money.  The donations tallied over $4,000.00 which allowed us to purchase 12 IPad Minis and protective covers for them.  The district added additional grant money to allow us to purchase a total of 24 IPad minis.  The Pads are identified with Sharon Wicker Memorial Fund engraved on the back.  Teacher's are learning how to use them in conjunction with their curriculum and the students are loving them.

PTO donates to IPads

The OVES PTO donated a cart to store, charge and sync the IPads the we received from the Sharon Wicker Memorial Technology Fund and district grant funds.  The cart will help protect and keep the IPads ready for classes as they need them.  It also allows to load teacher requested apps for their classroom.

Thank you to the PTO.

Students to Learn About Birds

The Moultrie County Soil and Water District is sponsoring an assembly for OVES.  The assembly is called Raptor's 101.  students will see and learn about a hawk, owl, falcon, and bald eagle!  It has been rumored that at least one bird will be flying in our gym.  The assembly will be December 14th at 2:00.  We would like to thank Sue Yarnell for her help in securing this opportunity.

4th Grader's Choose Donations over Gifts

For the second year, the 4th grade classes have elected to not participate in a gift exchange but to collect donations for a worthy cause.  Last year the students raised over $400 for the Macon County Animal Control which is a no kill facility.  This year they have decided to donate to the "Big Brothers, Big Sisters Organization".  The class will donate the normal gift fee of $5.00 to this organization.  We at OVES applaud this students and are proud of their decision to help others in this season of giving.

JUMP WITH JILL ASSEMBLY

Jump with Jill came to our school during October.  What was Jump with Jill.  It is a rock music themed assembly where good nutrition and eating habits are the topic.  Jill used rock music, singing and dancing to get the kids involved to help them remember what they had seen.  The students have been talking about it since she was here and she left us the CD that has the same songs on it.  Good nutrition is the key to your health.
