On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, UChicago Impact will administer the third annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey, a unique opportunity for teachers, students, and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. From January 12 through March 13, 2015 teachers, students, and parents will be asked to take a 20-30 minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment.

This survey is based on the Five Essentials for School Success, an evidence-based framework developed by the University of Chicago. This framework identifies how school performance on five factors or “essentials” can indicate important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.
The 5Essentials areas are:
  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

OVES Spreads the Christmas Spirit

OVES students started December 19th by giving to the community.  The entire school went caroling, spreading the Christmas spirit.  Students went to the bank, cafe, Casey's, Village Hall, Senior Apartments and some private homes near the school.  The students said they had a great time. Although there wasn't any snow it was sunny.  Great Job kids!

Casey's joins OVES for Food Drive 12/1 – 12/12

Casey’s in Bethany is joining OVES for a food drive that will benefit food pantries in Bethany and Findlay.  Students may start bringing in food on December 1st and will continue until December 12th.  The class that donates the largest number of items will win a pizza party from Casey’s.  To help even things out the 2 kindergarten classes will combine and compete as one, all other classes are on their own.

UPDATE:  The students of OVES donated more than 1,000 items of food totaling over 1,000lbs.  The Kindergarten won the pizza party from Casey's by bringing in the most items of all classes.  Casey's employees gathered and delivered the donoted items and brought the kindergarten their pizza.

Dance for a Cause II

Last year we had 3 girls who wanted to make a difference and asked to have a toy drive for Toys for Tots.  They came to me last week asking if they could do something similar.  *We are SUPER excited to put on our second annual dance fundraiser.  We are asking for NEW toy donations.  The hospital requires the toys to be new so no bacteria are brought in.  The toys will be taken down to Barnes Children’s Hospital in St. Louis before Christmas.  If you are unable to donate a toy you are still welcome to join the dance party.  There will be lots of music, dancing, drinks, and cookies.

UPDATE:  The students responded well for the Dance for a Cause II.  We will update the final number of toys after they are delivered but there were more toys donated this year compared to last.  We are very proud of our students for being so giving during the Christmas Season.  Below is a picture of the toys under the tree.
